Java is the heartland of Indonesian football. Thirteen of the eighteen Super League clubs are based on the island, including the giants of the game: Persija Jakarta, Persib Bandung, Persebaya Surabaya and Arema of Malang. The rivalries here are old, the crowds are huge and the atmosphere on a big match night is unlike anywhere else in Southeast Asia.
Clubs are grouped below by province: Jakarta and Banten, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, and East Java (which includes Madura United across the strait on Madura island). Most stadiums are reachable by taxi or ride-hailing app from the city centre, and Java's train network makes it easy to combine matches in several cities on one trip.
For first-time visitors, a mid-table fixture is the easiest way in. Derbies and big rivalry games sell out fast and often come with restrictions on away fans, so check each club's official channels before you travel.
